Sunni, Shia, or "Just Muslim"? Why Afayer Asks About Sect and Practice

5 min read

When you set up your Afayer profile, one of the first questions asks about your sect and how you practise — Sunni, Shia, or "Just Muslim"; very practising, practising, moderate, or learning. A few people ask us why we ask this so directly, so early. Here's the honest answer.

It matters more than most apps admit

General dating and matrimony platforms tend to treat religion as one line among many — a checkbox next to hobbies and star sign. For a lot of Muslims looking for marriage, it isn't one factor among many; it's close to the foundation everything else is built on. How someone prays, what school of thought their family follows, how observant they are day to day — these shape what a shared life actually looks like, long after the initial attraction has settled into routine.

Leaving that unspoken doesn't make it less important. It just means you find out three months in, after real feelings are involved, instead of on day one when it's simply information.

We ask so you don't have to guess

Plenty of members tell us they used to dread bringing up sect or practice level in early conversations on other platforms — it felt like an interrogation, or worse, an accusation. Putting it on the profile from the start removes that entirely. Nobody has to be the one who asks. It's just there, the same way age or location is just there.

It isn't about ranking anyone

To be clear about what this filter is not: it's not a judgment of anyone's Islam, and "very practising" isn't a score to maximise. Different people are at different points in their journey, practise differently, and come from different traditions within the same faith — all genuinely, all worth respecting. The filter exists so two people can find out early whether their approaches are compatible for building a life together, not so anyone can be ranked against a standard.

You're always in control of what you share

  • You choose how to answer — including "Just Muslim" if that's genuinely how you identify, without a more specific sect attached.
  • You can filter matches by these fields, or leave your own filters open and let the algorithm surface a range.
  • Nothing here is verified or policed — it's self-reported information members use to have better first conversations, the same way you'd introduce yourself in person.

The goal of asking early is simple: fewer wasted conversations, fewer awkward surprises, and more time spent talking to people you're actually compatible with — which is the entire point of using an app built for marriage instead of one built for swiping.
